Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance

 

 

Below is information regarding San Francisco’s Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance No. 100-09 and SB 1383 Statewide Mandatory Organic Waste Collection.

 

 

 

“All persons in San Francisco must separate their refuse into recyclables, compostables and trash” and “No person may mix recyclables, compostables, or trash, or deposit refuse of one type in a collection container designated for another type of refuse.”

“Organic waste” food scraps, plants, dirty, soiled, and non-soiled paper, and other acceptable composting materials.

  • Residents are required to properly sort their organic waste into the correct container.

Compostable material (organic waste) goes into the Green Container

Recyclable material goes into the Blue Container

Landfill or Trash material goes into the Black Container

 

Compostable and Recyclable materials must not be put in the Black Landfill container.
